Handmade watercolors
July 3, 2025I dabbled in making my own paints for the first time. In a little over two months (somewhere between March and May) I made this many (see photo with the open tin case)!! It was very satisfying and I learned about pigments a lot. Few additional close-ups with the more succesful attempts at making granulating paints.
Watercolor binder recipe:
▫️8 parts distilled water
▫️4 parts powdered gum arabic (note that the liquid version would require different amounts of gum and water!)
▫️1 part linden or acacia (robinia) honey (they are the lightest, it won’t interfere with the color)
▫️1 part glycerine
+ preservative: few drops of clove essential oil or for better results, sodium benzoate.
Mix
gum arabic in warmed water. When it dissolves, add the rest of
ingredients and stir until it mixes well together. Let it sit for about
24 hours, store in the fridge.
For the amount shown in the photo, I used tablespoons and stored it in a small jar. It was enough to fill ~72 half pans or 36 full pans.
